The Dempster Highway is named for Royal Northwest Mounted Police officer William John Duncan Dempster who used dog teams to patrol the route from Dawson City, Yukon to Fort McPherson, Northwest Territories. This all-weather road crosses the Arctic Circle and ends near Inuvik on the Mackenzie River delta. Yukon’s most northerly park and the remains of an early 1890s whaling station on Herschel Island are only accessible by boat or plane.
